A game Changer for Tancook Island
Big Tancook island is on the verge of a major upgrade: a brand new 18 car ferry is being built to replace the ageing passenger only ferry, dramatically improving connectivity, safety, and opportunity.
The new ferry will depart from Blandford (instead of Chester), reducing the crossing time to just 30 minutes. With more frequent service estimated at around 11 round trips daily, up from just four – island life will feel closer than ever.
This is more than just convenience. The ferry will be able to carry cars, trucks, and emergency vehicles, opening up new possibilities for residents, visitors, and commerce. The investment – jointly funding by the Nova Scotia and Canadian governments demonstrates powerful support for the long term viability of the islands.
As of the latest updates, terminal construction at Blandford and Big Tancook is underway, with completion expected in 2026. Once finished, the new ferry service promises to transform life on Tancook, enhancing access to health care, goods and services while preserving the island’s charm.
